Mango jam is not the first thing you think of when you hear the word jam. Most people think of strawberry jam, blueberry jam, or another jam.

However, you will instantly fall in love once you taste this mango jam recipe. The mango jam is sweet and slightly tart. Plus, you only need 4 ingredients to make it. In less than 20 minutes, you will have the perfect mango jam.

Are Mangoes Good For Making Jam

Let’s get one thing out of the way. You can make jam with mangoes. You can make jam with nearly every fruit on the planet. Mangoes are the perfect fruit for jams, jellies, or preserves. They are naturally sweet, so you don’t have to add too much sugar to the jam.

What Is Mango Jam Made Of

Mango jam is made with 4 simple ingredients. Homemade mango puree, sugar-free sweetener, lime juice, and pectin are the ingredients that make up this tasty spread.

Why Mango Puree

I used mango puree instead of fresh diced mangoes to make the jam. Some people will tell you you shouldn’t use stringy mangoes to make mango jam.

This recipe is proof that you can make a tasty mango jam with what you have on hand. So if all you have are stringy mangoes, use them.

I used Tommy Atkins mangoes to make this mango jam. They are one of the stringiest mangoes on the planet. Besides Haden mangoes, they are the most common mango in the Bahamas.

I received these mangoes from my family, and I am not one for wasting perfectly good mangoes, even if they are stringy. So I made homemade mango puree and stored it in the freezer until I could develop a few recipes I could use it in.

There are no strings in my mango puree. So I used it to make mango jam.

Do Mangoes Contain A Lot Of Pectin

Mango is a low-pectin fruit. Mangoes contain about 5-11% pectin. Most of this pectin is in the peel.

Can I Make Mango Jam Without Pectin

As I mentioned above, mangoes have low levels of pectin, so the jam needs a little help to set. Mango puree has a looser texture than pulp. So I used pectin to help the mango jam set.

However, you do not have to use pectin to make mango jam. Simply place the mango puree and sugar-free sweetener in a small pot and heat it over medium-low heat until it thickens. The mango jam should be as thick as jelly.

Next, add the fresh lime juice, stir to combine, and turn off the heat. Let the mango jam cool completely, then place it into a sterilized mason jar and place it in the fridge.

Tips For Making Mango Jam

Mango jam is very easy to make. Here are a few tips to make this recipe even better.

  1. Use ripe mangoes to make the mango puree. The mangoes should be ripe but not too ripe.
  2. To make the mango puree, peel 2 Haden mangoes or 4 Tommy Atkins mangoes and dice them. Place the mangoes into a blender and squeeze the juice from the seed into the blender. Add 1-2 tablespoons of water if necessary, and blend the mangoes until smooth. Strain the mango puree in a fine-mesh sieve and follow the recipe below.
  3. Strain the mango jam once you remove it from the heat. There were a few clumps of pectin that did not dissolve completely once I removed it from the heat. So I strained the jam to make sure it was smooth.
  4. Do not overcook the mango jam. The jam will burn if you overcook it. Cook it just until it has a thick jelly-like consistency.
  5. Watch the jam carefully. Stir the mango jam often to prevent it from burning on the bottom.

Why Is My Mango Jam Runny

Your jam may be runny because it needs more time to cool. The mango jam will thicken more as it cools down, so do not panic if it seems runny immediately after you take it off the stove.

Another reason why the jam may be runny is because you undercooked it. The mango jam takes at least 15-20 minutes to thicken up.

The mango jam may be runny because you did not add enough pectin. Add 1 1/2 teaspoons of powdered pectin and 1 tablespoon of water per cup of jelly or jam. This recipe makes 1 cup of mango jam. However, I omitted the water because I used mango puree to make the jam.

How To Fix Runny Mango Jam

If your mango jam comes out runny, there is no need to panic. It’s an easy fix. Add 1 teaspoon of fresh lime juice or 1/2 teaspoon of powdered pectin and stir to combine. Return the mango jam to the heat and cook it over medium-low heat for 5-10 minutes, stirring often until it thickens to a jelly-like state.

What Do You Do With Mango Jam

There are many ways to use mango jam. You can use it as a spread for toast, biscuits, muffins, and scones. Manjo jam makes an excellent topping for pancakes and waffles. You can also use it to make mango drop cookies or mango biscuits.

How Long Does Mango Jam Last

Typically mango jam lasts about 2 years if it is canned properly. However, this is not a canning recipe, so I would recommend storing it in the fridge and using it within 1-2 weeks.
