This homemade hummus recipe is a must-try! It is creamy, flavorful, and incredibly easy to make.

This hummus recipe is perfect for snacking, spreading on wraps or sandwiches, or serving at gatherings. With just a few simple ingredients like garbanzo beans (chickpeas), nutty tahini, garlic, and lemon juice, you can whip up a creamy, delicious dip in minutes.

What Is Hummus Made Of?

Hummus is made of these ingredients:

  • Chickpeas (aka garbanzo beans): You can use canned chickpeas or homemade chickpeas. Homemade chickpeas will have a better flavor, but canned works just as well if you’re in a pinch or feeling lazy.
  • Tahini: Tahini is a paste made from sesame seeds. It helps give the hummus its rich nutty flavor and creamy texture.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: Fresh lemon juice makes all the difference here. The bottled stuff has preservatives and artificial flavors. It just doesn’t measure up to fresh lemon juice.

Variations

Traditional hummus is delicious. But sometimes, you have to mix things up a little. If you’ve seen hummus in the grocery store, you know there are many ways to jazz it up. Here are some ways you can jazz up your homemade hummus:

  • Roasted Garlic: Use 3 roasted garlic cloves instead of 2 raw garlic cloves.
  • Roasted Red Peppers: Add 1-2 roasted red peppers and 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of smoked paprika to the hummus. It will give the hummus a slightly smoky, sweet flavor.
  • Avocado Hummus: Add a ripe avocado and swap the lemon juice for 1/4 cup of fresh lime juice to make the hummus extra creamy and rich.
  • Beet Hummus: Add 1-2 steamed or roasted beets to the hummus. It will give the hummus a pretty pink color and earthy flavor.
  • Pesto: Add 2-3 tablespoons of pesto to the hummus to give it a rich herbaceous flavor.
  • Pumpkin Hummus: Add pumpkin puree, 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and 1/8 teaspoon of ground nutmeg to create a fall-inspired hummus. Garnish it with maple syrup instead of olive oil.

What to Serve with Hummus

Hummus is really versatile. It can be served in many ways and used in many dishes. Here are a few ways you can serve hummus:

  • You can serve hummus with veggies or pita chips.
  • Slather it on crostini or crackers and serve it as an appetizer.
  • Place it in the center of your next charcuterie or crudite board or platter.
  • Add spoonfuls of it to your next Buddha bowl or shawarma wrap.

Storage Instructions

Storing homemade hummus is really easy. Just place it in an airtight container and store it in the fridge for 1 week.

You can also freeze hummus. Place it in an airtight container, then cover the hummus with a small amount (1-2 tablespoons) of olive oil. Cover it and freeze it for 1 month.
